How customers pay an invoice online
What your customer sees when they open the payment link, which payment methods work, and where the money shows up.
- For
- Office staff, Admin, Owner
- Where
- Web app
- Updated
What the customer does
- They open the link in the email. No login is needed.
- They choose a card, a bank account (ACH, with a consent checkbox), or Apple Pay or Google Pay where their device supports it.
- If tips are turned on for your company, they can Add a tip?
- They click Pay and land on a receipt page.
If the payment form will not load for them, the page offers "Trouble paying? Open secure Stripe Checkout" as a fallback.
What you see afterwards
- The invoice changes to Paid, or Partially Paid for a part payment.
- The payment appears under Payments, on the Transactions tab, with its method and status. Card and bank payments show Processing until Stripe confirms them.
Related settings
- Payment terms and invoice reminders: Payments, then the Retry tab.
- Your Stripe account, balance and payouts: Payments, then the Provider tab.
What if this fails?
- The customer says the link only lets them view the invoice.
- That link was shared view-only ("This link can view the invoice, but not pay it"). Resend the invoice with Include payment link on.
- A bank payment has been Processing for days.
- ACH transfers take several business days to clear. If it later shows Failed, the customer's bank returned it; ask them to pay another way.
